On May 20th, 2023, the Oloosirkon residents came together to launch the Sikron annual run. The primary purpose of the marathon is to give back to their community and address crucial issues such as education, conservation, and climate change.
The Journey So Far
The inaugural run occurred in 2016, followed by another successful event in 2018. The growing momentum and support from residents and external stakeholders have allowed this event to become an anticipated tradition in Oloosirkon. Each year, the run continues to attract more participants and significantly impacts the community.
Partnerships for a Shared Vision
The success of the Oloosirkon run can be attributed to the collaborative efforts of several key partners. These organisations and businesses recognise the importance of investing in education, conservation, and climate change mitigation. Some of the notable partners include:
Maasai Lodge Hotel: A renowned establishment that offers logistical support and venue facilities for the event.
Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS): KWS plays a crucial role by providing security, as a portion of the run will take place within the Nairobi National Park.
Nairobi National Park: The iconic national park will serve as a route for the run and provide a picturesque backdrop for the event.
Amaco Insurance: Their support will contribute to the successful execution of the run and its associated activities.
Equity Bank: Demonstrating their commitment to the community, Equity Bank donated 450K and 3,000 tree seedlings distributed among three local primary schools: Oloosirkon Primary, Sholinke Primary, and Emakoko Primary. The initiative, "Let a Child Adopt a Tree," aimed to foster environmental consciousness among the younger generation.
Leleshwa Getaway: This eco-friendly retreat will be the endpoint for both runs and supports the event by offering resources and promotions.
Reality Media: The media company will ensure extensive coverage and visibility for the run, raising awareness about the cause.
Former MP Laikipia: The involvement of prominent individuals, such as the former Member of Parliament from Laikipia, showcases the event's significance on a broader scale.
Maji Zima Ltd: A non-profit organisation concerned with safe drinking water solutions and will contribute by providing safe drinking water during the event.Ã Ã
Activities for the Day
The marathon will be the event's centrepiece, with all ages participating in a collective effort to support their community. However, the organisers have gone above and beyond by incorporating various activities to engage participants and attendees. These include:
Exhibition Village: Local businesses are invited to set up stalls for a small fee, allowing them to showcase and sell their products to the attendees. This platform will generate revenue for the businesses and foster a sense of community support.
Bouncing Castle: A vibrant and enjoyable addition for children, providing them with hours of laughter and fun.
Football: A friendly football match can unite people, encouraging teamwork and physical activity.
Tug of War: A spirited competition will ignite friendly rivalries and foster a sense of camaraderie among participants.
Swimming: Participants can have the opportunity to enjoy a refreshing swim.
Family Fun 5K Run: Besides the main run, a shorter 5K run will be organised specifically for families, emphasising the importance of inclusivity and togetherness.
Parting Shot
The Oloosirkon family-run launch serves as a testament to the power of community involvement and collaboration. The participation of residents, businesses, and stakeholders will significantly impact the Oloosirkon community, fostering a sense of unity and empowerment. As this tradition continues to grow, it promises to uplift the community, inspiring other regions to undertake similar initiatives for the betterment of society. We hope to see you all on June 4th for the run!
